50 years of promoting our Local History
The Texas Historical Society will be celebrating 50 years of promoting our local history to residents and visitors alike in 2022. The Texas Historical Society was formed on the 9th August 1972 and with the assistance of Creative Arts Group purchased the Police Residence on the 8th August 1973, with land to be held in trust by the Inglewood Shire Council.
The main building of the Museum was built as a Police Barracks near the then village of Texas on the banks of the Dumaresq River. Completed in March 1890 it was due to be opened by a Police Superintendent from Toowoomba but the night before the opening, the river rose and the building was washed off its blocks and became stuck between two large trees (28 March 1890). Following the flood the building was rescued from the trees and moved up to its present site at 40 Flemming Street and was used as the Police Sergeant's residence until the new Police Station was opened in High Street, 1971.
The Texas Heritage Museum and Tobacco Centre is one of the main tourist attractions in the town of Texas and offers a fascinating insight into the interesting history of the local area. The Texas Heritage Museum contributes to local cultural tourism and regional development in numerous ways.
